Against all odds: care home residents prepare for 10-mile charity walk

Team members and residents of Chorleywood Manor Care Home are gearing up to cross 10 London Bridges with an aim to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Aged between their late 80s and early 90s, residents of Chorleywood Manor Care Home are living proof that stereotypes don’t limit you from being alive without boundaries. Residents are currently preparing to take on a 10-mile charity walk across London to raise crucial funds for a new children’s cancer centre at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

The walk is due to commence on Wednesday 21st May and will see participants cross 10 London bridges, starting at Battersea Bridge and finishing at Tower Bridge.

Organised in partnership with Avery Healthcare – one of the UK’s leading providers of residential, dementia and respite care – the event is looking to raise £2,500 to support the hospital work.

Eric Heather, aged 93, is one of the residents taking part in the walk and he has explained he will stop at nothing to help a good cause.

‘This is about showing that we can still contribute, no matter our age or ability,’ he said.

‘I’m proud to be part of this challenge and hope it inspires others to get involved.’

Echoing a similar tone, fellow resident Yvonne Field, aged 89, who has limited movement down one side after suffering a stroke, said: I’m not letting anything stop me from participating, I want to make a difference for these children.’

Training for the event has included tailored exercise classes, with participants offered walking and wheelchair support when needed.

‘We’re doing this to make a real difference,’ Patrick, wellbeing manager at Chorleywood Manor Care home said. ‘Our residents are determined to help in any way that they can.’
