Police officers restart over 100 hearts using cardiac arrest alerting app
Police officers from several different forces have helped restart the hearts of over 100 people thanks to an app which alerts nearby responders when someone is suffering a cardiac arrest.
The GoodSAM Responder App is integrated with most UK ambulance services and when a cardiac arrest call comes in, the system automatically sends a notification to registered nearby responders. GoodSAM Responders are NHS (e.g. nurses, doctors, paramedics, therapists), police and fire staff, first aiders and others who are trained in CPR.
Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire (BCH) police forces are the first in the UK to have integrated GoodSAM for cardiac arrest alerts, in partnership with the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST). Over 500 police colleagues across BCH have responded to alerts to date, many of whom have administered life-saving CPR.
